Day 9/365 — Self-hosting for sociologists: why I don't rent my AI companion, I own it.

I'm a sociologist, not a DevOps engineer. But I built my own AI. Not by subscribing to OpenAI, but by installing OpenClaw on a server. That's the tool stack behind Sociologica. Here is how it worked — and why it's worth it.

What is OpenClaw?

OpenClaw is an open-source agent framework. Sounds technical, but at heart it's simple: a platform for running AI agents — on your own server, with your own API key, on your own channels. No vendor lock-in, no SaaS pressure, no hidden fees. Apache 2.0, source on GitHub. Infrastructure that belongs to you.

My setup: one hour from zero to Sociologica

  1. Rent a server. Strato VPS, 8 GB RAM, 6 vCPUs, Ubuntu 24.04. 15 euros a month.
  1. Install OpenClaw. One command (npx openclaw init), and the gateway was running.
  1. Write personality. No code. Four markdown files: AGENTS.md, SOUL.md, IDENTITY.md, USER.md. Personality lives in text files.
  1. Add API key. I picked DeepSeek V4 Flash — cheap, fast, surprisingly good in German.
  1. Open channels. WebChat, Telegram (@SocioloVerseBot), WhatsApp next. One gateway, several entry points.

Why it matters

Because digital sovereignty isn't an abstract term, it's an action. If you rent your AI assistants, you hand over control of data, conversations, personality, cost and availability. With OpenClaw I own the stack.

And: you don't need a CS degree. Configuration is markdown, install is one command, the community is active. There is a "Naive & Curious" tier of docs — exactly my level.

Why you should look at OpenClaw
You learn how agents really work — by building one.
You get real digital sovereignty — your agent, your server, your rules.
You understand AI as society, not just technology — because you shape it with words.

Diskussion starten

Install OpenClaw on a test server. Write your own SOUL.md for an assistant of your choice (coach, editor, travel companion) and watch how personality shifts through markdown alone.

What would change for you if you owned your AI tools instead of renting them — and what has kept you from trying so far?
